ASEOHosting Advises Webmasters Not To Put Too Much Faith In Public PageRank Data

Hudson, FL, October 22, 2013 – ASEOHosting, a provider of premium multiple IP hosting, has commented on the risks of relying on publicly available PageRank measurements as a metric for determining the efficacy of search engine optimization campaigns. The company, which offers industry-leading SEO-focused web hosting, is concerned that its clients and the wider web development and search engine optimization communities are privileging PageRank measurements compared to other data, which can be detrimental to their efforts to achieve higher ranking on search engine results pages.

When Google first launched, the PageRank algorithm was the factor that enabled them to produce search rankings of a higher quality than competing search engine providers. But, over the years the reliability of the publicly available PageRank figures, which are largely drawn from the Google Toolbar, has been significantly eroded. There are two main factors behind the reduced importance of the PageRank figures available to SEOs and web masters.

Firstly, the complexity of Google’s ranking algorithms have increased by orders of magnitude. Over 200 signals now go into determining ranking positions. While Google’s internal PageRank figures are still an important ranking component because they reflect the number of incoming links to a page, other signals are equally important. Theoretically, it is possible to engage in link building campaigns that increase a page’s PageRank, but in the absence of other signals of quality, link building efforts alone are not sufficient.

Secondly, the PageRank numbers Google makes publicly available are not an accurate representation of Google’s internal assessment. In a recent statement, Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s webspam team, revealed that published PageRank figures are updated infrequently and do not accurately reflect a page’s genuine PageRank.

“We feel that web masters who rely too much on publicly available PageRank figures are likely to be harming their chances of ranking well,” commented ASEOHosting’s Vice President of Customer Relations, Daniel Page, “An exclusive interest in PageRank figures may distract site owners from properly deploying their resources in a direction more likely to be beneficial.”

Rather than focusing on PageRank, ASEOHosting advises webmasters to focus their search engine optimization investments on creating sites with high-quality valuable content that provides a good experience for users and using social media and other relationship building techniques like guest building to increase awareness.
