ASEOHosting Advises Webmasters Not To Put Too Much Faith In Public PageRank Data

When Google first launched

PageRank’s algorithm once allowed them to outrank competing search engines. However, the publicly available PageRank figures, mostly from the Google Toolbar, have become less reliable. This is due to two main factors.

Firstly, the complexity of Google’s ranking algorithms have increased by orders of magnitude. Over 200 signals now go into determining ranking positions. While Google’s internal PageRank figures are still an important ranking component because they reflect the number of incoming links to a page, other signals are equally important.

Theoretically, it is possible to engage in link building campaigns that increase a page’s PageRank, but in the absence of other signals of quality, link building efforts alone are not sufficient.

Secondly, the PageRank numbers Google makes publicly available are not an accurate representation of Google’s internal assessment. In a recent statement, Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s webspam team, revealed that published PageRank figures are updated infrequently and do not accurately reflect a page’s genuine PageRank.

“We feel that web masters who rely too much on publicly available PageRank figures are likely to be harming their chances of ranking well,”
