When Google first launched <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

PageRank’s algorithm once allowed them to outrank competing search engines. However, the publicly available PageRank figures, mostly from the Google Toolbar, have become less reliable. This is due to two main factors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Firstly, the complexity of Google\u2019s ranking algorithms have increased by orders of magnitude. Over 200 signals now go into determining ranking positions. Google’s internal PageRank figures are still important. They reflect a page’s incoming links. However, other signals are just as important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Theoretically, it is possible to engage in link building campaigns that increase a page\u2019s PageRank, but in the absence of other signals of quality, link building efforts alone are not sufficient.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Secondly, the PageRank numbers Google makes publicly available are not an accurate representation of Google\u2019s internal assessment. In a recent statement<\/a>, Matt Cutts, the head of Google\u2019s webspam team, revealed that published PageRank figures are updated infrequently and do not accurately reflect a page\u2019s genuine PageRank.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
