Amidst all this, an alternative has appeared, courtesy of Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales. Known as Wikitribune Social, it will be supported in the same fashion as Wikipedia. Rather than relying on a data-driven model and ad monetization, Wikitribune will run entirely on user donations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Wales aims to fight fake news and let users reclaim data ownership with this network. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
\n\u201cThe business model of social network companies, pure advertising, is problematic,\u201d <\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n
Wales said in an interview with The Financial Times<\/a>. <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WT Social promises never to sell user data and addresses fake news and hollow algorithms. It is, at its core, a social network about user empowerment. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
Anyone can edit content about others, which Wales admits may be problematic but trusts community policing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He has also acknowledged that it will not be profitable. It will simply be sustainable. And maybe, someday, it\u2019ll change social media as a whole. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

You\u2019re probably wondering what any of this has to do with marketing and business. After all, WT Social by its very nature seems entirely incompatible with any sort of revenue model. And it\u2019s true, it is – but that\u2019s not where its value lies from a marketing perspective. <\/p>\n\n\n\n
On a social network like WT Social, you\u2019d have the opportunity to truly <\/em>interact with your audience. Without sales pressure, you can better understand your audience\u2019s wants and interests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This assumes WT Social succeeds and inspires other networks. At the time of writing, it has only 200,000 users. If and when it grows larger, it could bring about real change elsewhere in the social media ecosystem.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
