When Google first launched, the PageRank algorithm was the factor that enabled them to produce search rankings of a higher quality than competing search engine providers. But, over the years the reliability of the publicly available PageRank figures, which are largely drawn from the Google Toolbar, has been significantly eroded. There are two main factors behind the reduced importance of the PageRank figures available to SEOs and web masters.
Firstly, the complexity of Google’s ranking algorithms have increased by orders of magnitude. Over 200 signals now go into determining ranking positions. In a recent statement, Matt Cutts, the head of Google’s webspam team, revealed that published PageRank figures are updated infrequently and do not accurately reflect a page’s genuine PageRank.
